Legalization of Medical Marijuana and the Doctrine of Utilitarianism
Introduction
Utilitarianism is one of the moral theories that is best known and influential. According to this theory, the moral worth of an action is mainly determined its contribution towards utility that enhances happiness and pleasure. It is mainly concerned with the pleasure that people get through the moral actions taken. The focus is on the greatest number of people. In the pursuit of this theory, then legalization of marijuana can be handled amicably. Like the utilitarianism, I believe that the purpose morality should be to increase the number of good things that make people happy and increase pleasure.

It is true that marijuana is not legalized in some states and countries. It is also true that it is being traded secretly and people are buying it through the black market. This idea is not appreciable in the sense that misuse and abuse are rampant. There are no bodies involved in the regulation of the drug. As a result, the consumers are not informed. Making marijuana legal will mean that interested individuals will access it and the usage will be monitored. There will be no effect on the users as it is now. Other than building a community with others who smoke marijuana that would lead to additional happiness in the future, and getting caught could greatly decrease happiness.
Purity: The probability that the action will not be followed by sensations of the opposite kind. The potential for pain through legal prosecution, getting fired from the job, losing the trust of friends or family. While the happiness is present, the potential for pain is also included.
Extent: How many people will be affected? If smoking marijuana is a social activity, then other people would be affected. Otherwise, others will only be affected if a person is caught,(implications or illegal issues) in which case, the happiness of others would decrease dramatically.

In conclusion, I believe that legalization of marijuana will bring many benefits to the people. The happiness they attain comes in a myriad of ways. By getting job opportunities, building infrastructure and reducing the effect of uncontrolled usage, the people will achieve many satisfactions.
