Bottom of the ninth. Two outs, nobody on. Lucas Giles, senior superstar at Richmond High School, peered into his catcher and took the sign to throw his dominating two strike curveball, buried in the dirt. The opposing batter took a big hack but came up three feet short. The Lions piled out of the dugout and rushed to the mound to celebrate a feat they hadn’t accomplished in nearly two decades, winning the New York state championship. Growing up in the Queens, Lucas was born into a life of agony. His father left the family when Lucas was two years old, his mother worked two jobs to help provide for her and Lucas, and Lucas struggled from an early age to find friends who stayed out of trouble. Lucas was his class’s president all four years of his high school career, doing what he loved, serving his classmates. Once he was close enough to see the fallen tower, he found a firefighter in training named Randall Sanders and asked him if he could help. In the midst of the chaos, Randall accepted the offer of help, and before he even had time to pick up any gear, the two young men were in the building.
Grazing through the thick black smoke, climbing collapsed staircases full of powdery white ash, and bodies scattered throughout the floor made Lucas rethink his daring act of entering the building, but he knew it was too late now. Lucas and Randall made it all the way to the tenth floor before they saw a person who was still alive. When they arrived on the floor, they could hear distinct voices of people coming from the opposite side of the room, but with all with all the fallen walls and mounds of debris it took almost five minutes before the group was spotted. Lucas immediately called to the group, “Come quick! We need to get out of here fast. Remain calm and follow me, we are going to make it out of here fine if we
