Sex Tourism in Thailand

“Sex tourism is both an economic and political phenomenon. It cannot exist without sources of demand, where these types of transactions are considered to be socially and politically legitimate” (Leheny, D. 1995, p.367-384). Sex tourism is evident through many different forms, but the most popular ways it is evident is through pornography, prostitution, and human trafficing. This trend is one of the main sources of revenue in Thailand. It holds 6 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) which is just over $31 billion. Due to the discrimination of these people, they cannot get their citizenship cards, which restrict them from obtaining almost any job that is available in Thailand, thus leaving them to exploit their children to help their families to survive. The children introduced into the sex tourism industry are seduced by relatives, acquaintances, and pimps convincing them that it was the only way to help their family financially. The children are brought into hotel rooms, bars, and brothels, and are to perform any type of sexual intercourse such as vaginal, anal, and oral sex on both men and women of all ages. The trafficked children do not speak the same language of those from Thailand, so they do not know precisely what they are endeavouring in and they are very “vulnerable to physical abuse and exploitation” (End Child Prostitution, Pornography and Trafficking UK). There are many groups out there today who are trying to save the children from these horrific events that are taking place. The Thai government has started to step in with more authority on the matter. However, when it comes to the immigrated children, the government will pull them out and ship them back to their home countries, providing them with no protection from them getting shipped back into Thailand to go through more exploitation.
