Despite this, prostitutes who experience these travesties are often too reluctant to seek help as there work is considered illegal. Often times prostitutes feel pressure to engage in intercourse without the use of protection, which leads to the development of an STI (sexually transmitted infection). According to Nevada law, “Sex workers in Nevada have to get monthly tests for syphilis and HIV and weekly tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia. Nevada also requires condoms for all sex in brothels.” The United Nations Development Programme released a report recently discussing the effects of the criminalization of prostitution on women in Asia and the Pacific. As mentioned above, the legalization of prostitution can be a towering source of income for the US government. It is impossible to tax prostitution now as it is illegal and the income received from it can not be regulated. Making prostitution legal would legally allow prostitution to be taxed, and it would be significantly easier to track where money is going. Some reports in Nevada state that a, “sex worker in Nevada earns as much as $3,000 per week.” The article also touched on many points that had previously not entered my mind. These including how legalizing prostitution would reduce the amount of violence and sex crimes, it would protect minors, and how legalizing it would reduce police spending on trying to prevent it.
