Clinical dysfunction of the Medial and Lateral Septal Area

The septal region is made up of the cortical septal area and the sub cortical septal nuclei. The septal nuclei are a group of telencephalic nuclei that are wrapped around the inferior, anterior, and superior aspects of the anterior commissure. Septal neurons function in modulating the activity of archicortical and neocortical circuits. This modulation is necessary for the development and normal occurrence of cortical rhythmic activities that control the processing of sensory information and memory formation1. Septal neurons not only provide the optimal level of excitatory background to cortical structure but also possess inhibitory control over the occurrence of abnormal excitatory

Atrial septal defect (ASD) is an abnormal communication between the atria (McCance, Huether, Brashers, & Rote, 2010, p. 1219).
