A sizable percentage of concussions in the NFL are caused by T-bone hits or hits between the eyes, and these hits offset the brain’s center of gravity (Giles, 2016). Concussions can also cause permanent long term damage to the wiring of the brain. In older athletes, blows to the head can cause more harm because adults have one-eighth to a quarter-inch of space between the brain itself and the skull. This allows for more room for the brain to repeatedly hit the skull, whereas in a teenage athlete, the brain is flush with the skull, and doesn’t give the brain any room to move (Giles, 2016). While any hit to the brain is devastating, it seems as though adults are more at risk of permanent neurological damage.

In an article for the National Football Post, Aaron Wilson reports that in August of 2015, Coxson was diagnosed with a Grade 3 concussion, suffered during the third day of their training camp. Per Wilson, Coxson stated that he was hoping to eventually return to normal and was disappointed that he wouldn’t be able to play football because of his health. Coxson explained in a telephone interview why he left the NFL,
I’m retiring because I’m still having symptoms and my health is more important to me than the game of football. It’s been recommended to me by two neurologists and two doctors to retire from football. The next hit to my head could possibly kill me or be life damaging. This last one could be life damaging.
