What is Self-Management in the workplace? Self-Management is an alternative to the traditional, hierarchical method of organizing we see most often in modern organizations. Each member of the organization is personally responsible for managing their own personal relationships, planning their own work, coordinating their actions with other members, acquiring requisite resources to accomplish their job duties, and for taking corrective action with respect to other members when needed. Self-Management is more than just a set of business trends; it 's a fundamental mind-shift in the way we view human organizations, management and organizational strategy. Motivation is very much a psychological process that is found in the interaction between the person and their environment. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is connected to motivation since one must understand self-aspiration that exists in each of the hierarchical blocks. When an individual’s personal identity is prominent, the need to self-actualize or build upon their self-esteem is what drives the cycle of personal growth and advancement in the self-motivation process (Latham & Pinder, 2005, pg. 1-2). People are motivated to attain goals and accomplish objectives, both in a personal and work (group) setting. These goals for further advancement are internalized and serve for a behavioral expectation for the work environment. An individual will strive to complete goals that are common in the workplace, thus the self-motivation helps maintain the balance this person needs to complete the goal …show more content…
In the team’s research, it was also found that time-management plays a crucial role as a predictor of “perceived control of time, which at least partially mediates the relation between time management behavior and well-being” as it coveys overall job satisfaction (Häfner & Stock, 2010, pg. 2). Self-motivation links to time-management as the individual sets a level of initiative to complete a task in a timely manner. The belief that they possess the skillset to accomplish the goal helps drive the correlation between doing the task and completing it in a timely manner by setting realistic goals or milestones. Most individuals will not possess all the required skillset to be continuously successful, but the individuals with higher self-motivation levels have the ability to recognize the gaps and set reasonable adjustments in order to develop
