Maslow proposed that motivation is someone’s endeavour at fulfilling five basic needs: physiological, safety, love and belongingness, esteem and self-actualisation. According to Maslow, these needs can create internal pressure that can influence someone’s behaviour.
Physiological needs are those that are required for a man to survive such as air, nutrition, water, shelter, clothing and sleep. As a director of an organization, you can report for physiological needs of your employee by providing comfortable working environment, reasonable duration of work and the necessary breaks.
Safety needs include those needs that provide a person with a sense of security and well-being. Personal security, financial security, trade good health and protection from accidents, injury and their adverse effects are all included in safety needs. As a manager of an organization, you can vouch for safety needs of your employees by providing safe working conditions, secure compensation (such as a salary) and job security, which is especially important in a bad economy.
