The search for one’s own true self is a quest that can take a lifetime to achieve, for we are continually evolving over the course of our lifetime. So, the big question is, what truly makes us, us? If siblings share the same basic upbringing, then why can one have a mental illness and the other(s) be stable? Which brings the question, are the personalities we have inherited or acquired? These two questions have piqued an interest into this subject matter. And though it will be a journey of self-discovery, there’s always the underlying possibility it will raise more questions than answers. Be that as it may, we are ever changing in developing our personality and habits over time.

When it comes to addiction(s) or mental illness(s), we are predisposed to these conditions, whether it be from the parent or a relative. When it comes to acquired traits, not one person has an identical personality, if that was true then it would be quite boring. The substantial role that a parent has in a child’s life, helps develop similar personality traits. But as the child gets older, they develop their own individuality, and this is due to their home life and their environment. Studies are starting to show a difference in our growth, and according to Introduction to Psychology, “Behavioral genetics studies have found that, for most traits, genetics is more important than parental influence. And molecular genetics studies have begun to pinpoint the particular genes that are causing these differences. The results of these studies might lead you to believe that your destiny is determined by your genes, but this would be a mistaken assumption” (open.lib.umn.edu). The point that this particular study is making, is that science is still continuing to research the reasons that will explain what key factors have an impact on our
