Often times there is a revolutionary idea that ushers in a new wave of thinking and trends that impact many generations to come. Run DMC had one of these revolutionary ideas during the conception, production and later marketing based on his song My Adidas. The piece discusses the many ways Run DMC sports his sneakers. In his song, Run DMC personifies the shoes to a best friend status. Through lyrics like “Now/Me and my Adidas do the illest things/We like to stomp out pimps with diamond rings,” and “We make a good team my Adidas and me/We get around together, rhyme forever/And we won't be mad when worn in bad weather” the rapper instills the message in all of his listeners that adidas is an influential brand in his life. Reaching a possible new demographic in partnership with large celebrities is not a foreign concept. However, with rappers in particular, the resulting consumer populus grows to a stable peak in more urban neighborhoods. The overall legacy of the song in relation to Run DMC, is dual sided. Some may consider the impact on the people to be a positive one, due to greater cooperation between a symbol of blackness and high powers in industry. The connection shows a greater chance of the American Dream and a more integrated populus in power of mainstream America. With this being said, there are some critiques stating that this may encourage another set of prints to whitewash from America’s DNA. Connections that are liable to the whims of top marketing professionals and industry, may not be the most reflective of the consumers or the artists themselves.
