Love is an emotional state that ranges from deep affection to feelings of pleasure. These emotional states are often expressed through intimate behaviours (e.g. sexual intercourse, kissing and embracing). Sternberg’s triangle of love (Sternberg and Barnes, 1988) revealed three components of love; passion (e.g. sexual desires, anticipation, jealousy and fear), intimacy (e.g. physical comfort) and commitment.

Furthermore, the universal ideologies of love have led researchers to investigate the different categories of love. Fehr (1994) asked participants to identify different types of love by matching lists of features previously generated for each type of love. Hope is an optimistic belief of a better future. Merolla (2014) carried out two studies examining the influence of hope on romantic relationships. The results revealed that, individuals with high-hope were more satisfied with their relationships, compared to individuals with low-hope. Partners with high-hope were more likely to maintain romantic relationship, because they were more likely to solve conflict by talking to each other. Whereas, partners with low-hope were less likely to use talking managements to solve conflicts. Therefore, partners may feel frustrated, feel that they have no will power over their future, and lack the confidence to rationally solve conflict in their relationship, to secure love in the long-term. For example, Girme, Overall and Faingataa (2014) investigated the shared-activities of couples. Couples reported their shared activates (e.g. date nights and sporting activities) and statues of their relationship 3 months later. The findings revealed that satisfying, stress-free and increases proximity activities were correlated with more positive and happier relationships in the long-term. Girme et al, claimed that putting a lot energy and dedication into the shared-activities were, an essential predictor of strengthening relationship-quality.
