Definition Essay: Different Forms Of Love

Love comes in many different forms yet they are all variations of different combinations of three elements: passion, intimacy, and commitment. Through the relationships with my partner, friend, and pets, differing kinds of love are present. John, my current boyfriend, embodies consummate love which is the full combination of intimacy, passion, and commitment. I met John eleven years ago when he moved into the same apartment building as me. I remember it vividly; as I was playing with other kids in the courtyard, he was helping his parents take moving boxes out of their car and I was curious as to who this boy was. He wasn’t my first crush, but definitely my biggest. He quickly joined my friend circle and I found out that he was one year older …show more content…
I met him my junior year of high school through his cousin, another friend of mine. He was a sophomore, so he often came to me for school advice since I was an upperclassman. He was hilarious, constantly making me laugh and always lifting my spirits. We instantly grew extremely close and would hang out during all of our free time. We stayed in contact with each other through his senior year of high school and then our relationship faded away. Not because any issues arose, just that life took us in different directions. I’m very grateful for our friendship because he made me a stronger person and taught me to laugh at life. With Samaki, passion and commitment were absent from our relationship as I only experienced the intimacy element of love. We both bonded and established a level of trust, but our relationship lacked passion and long-term commitment. My two pet cats symbolize companionate love which is the combination of intimacy and commitment. I adopted my first cat, Ebony, when she was 6 months old and my second cat, Trouble, was gifted to me when he was only 6 weeks old. I’ve been a parent to them for years and they are like my babies. My relationships with my cats have and will continue to be long lasting. My cats and I are connected; they receive my affection through belly scratches and cuddles and then tell me they appreciate and love me by purring and nudging against my legs.
