The gladiator games first started as a sacrifice of blood to the dead. At first gladiators would fight to honor the dead by giving their blood in the Colosseum. This was traditionally only done for funerary offerings such as for aristocratic men who have past away. The games were not present at this time. Junius Brutus started the games to honor his father by matching three pair gladiators warriors to fight. Since then the games were held for entertainment. The gladiators would fight for their freedom, glory and virtue. In the Roman Time period, they were honored by their skill in the battle field. The Romans built twelve story high colosseums that could hold up to 50,000 people (www.historytoday.com). Like most sports arenas today, the Colosseum had box seats for the wealthy upper level, and regular seats for the common people. In the bottom is where the gladiators and animals were held. One popular aspect of gladiator fights were chariots. Gladiators would fight in chariots and attempt to knock each other off for an easy kill. The Roman emperor would hold the games for his people to give them enjoyment. The gladiator games were very popular among the people. The game gave the people time of enjoyment, fun and happiness. At first the games were all about making the people of Rome happy so they would not revolt. The Roman people were so poor that the emperor would pay for the games to make his people happy (www.historytoday.com). Without the games, the emperor would fear that he would be overthrown. Over time, the games became much more then just to make people happy. It became a yearly event that was trying to out do the last. By this time, the gladiator games were huge events in Roman society. Each gladiator has a class such as those who were heavily armed and armored, those who were lightly armed and armored, those who did not have any weapons or armors, and the ones who fought in specialised combat or environment(www.tribunesandtriumps.org). There are many more types of gladiators but here are a few to name. These games were not fair to each gladiator because a heavily equipped gladiator could fight a gladiator with no armor at all. Even though a gladiator was heavily equipped does not mean he could win. With heavy armor the gladiator’s movement is slower. He would not be able to reflect his opponent’s attack so easily. The helmet could also block some of his vision. That is basically the bad side of the heavily equipped gladiators. The good thing about being covered in armor is that your opponent will have a hard time landing a blow on you. You are safer in heavy armor compared to the light armor or no armor.The weapon the gladiator would use would be a heavy sword compared to light weaponry the other gladiators would
