Zeus, the King of the Gods, was a main aspect of Greek Mythology, and is an influential figure in society. He lived on Mt. Olympus, and ruled over all of the heavens. Zeus was born in Crete, and his parents were Cronus and Rhea. After he and his siblings defeated power hungry Cronus, Zeus became king alongside his five brothers and sisters, each with different strengths and weaknesses. Zeus’ symbols are lightning bolts, a bull, and an oak tree. He was considered to be the God of the sky, rain, and lightning, but he was also called the ruler of all of the Gods. While he was a God in Ancient Greek times, Zeus’ importance carries on traditions still today. He represents power and strength, just like he did in Greek times to mortals and immortals. …show more content…
These games held every four years were originally created after Zeus defeated Cronus and the other Titans. The first games were held in Olympia in 776 B.C. They were named the Olympics after Zeus’ home, Mount Olympus. The first contests included shot put, javelin, and the long jump. However, these games have evolved, and now include sports such as basketball, volleyball, and swimming. If it were not for Zeus’ contributions, the Olympic Games would not exist today. Besides an international sporting contest, Zeus has influenced the modern world by what he symbolizes. Power, strength, and dominance are what a company wants to embody. Fittingly, many companies are named after this powerful God including restaurants, mortgage companies, and even a pet food business. Some movies even feature Zeus as the king of the Greek Gods. Overall, Zeus has impacted the modern world greatly, through the Olympics and many company names, this Greek god has proved to be important even in recent …show more content…

Poseidon was given a trident, Hades an invisible cap, and Zeus received lightning bolts. With the power of all the siblings, the mighty Titans were defeated. Tartarus, a pitch black pit, is where Zeus sent the Titans, and power was restored to Mt. Olympus. Zeus has taken part in myths involving many women. A jealous Hera turned one of Zeus’ mistresses, Io, into a cow and a gadfly chased her through Greece. Also, Zeus and Princess Alcmena were the parents of the famous hero Hercules. However, Zeus did some terrible things to people he disliked. When Prometheus stole fire for mankind, Zeus chained him on a mountain where a hawk devoured his liver every day. Cronus had learned that one of his children was fated to dethrone him, so he swallowed all of his children as soon as they were born in order to keep it from happening. However, Cronus 's wife Rhea saved Zeus by switching him with a stone that Cronus then ate, and hid Zeus in a cave on Crete. Once Zeus grew to manhood he led a revolt against the Titans and succeeded in dethroning his father, possibly with the help of his brothers. Then he drew lots with his brothers Poseidon (god of the sea), and Hades (god of the underworld) to decide who would take their father 's place as ruler, and, as it turns out, Zeus was the winner, and this is how he gained the title King of the Gods and Ruler of the Olympians (Encyclopedia of Britannica). With his title as King of the Gods, being the lord of the sky and rain, and wielding a thunderbolt as a weapon, which he hurled at his enemies and those who defied him, he was to be feared as a very powerful god.…

Agency from the gods’ perspective Gods are believed to have plenary agency however, this is not the case. This is shown in an argument that Zeus and Hera have over the destruction of several cities of the mortal world (4.35-85). Their mismatch, therefore leads us to question the scope of the agency that god’s posses, and what they have control over. Agency is found in two different forms: the power to control events and the control of one’s actions. Zeus, the most powerful god in Olympus, has agency through his power.…
