I was wondering if you would like to attend the ludi circenses with me next week? There will be all sorts of events going on including the famous chariot races and gladiator fights. Did you know that these games occur roughly 10 to 12 times a year and are held by the emperor? The emperor holds them in order to distract the poor and unemployed from their miserable lives in the hopes that they won’t revolt against him. You know we’re unemployed so technically we could go to the games. The games are even nice because as they become more popular they become more extravagant, since the emperors feel compelled to outdo the previous year's events. It was designed with special drains so as to allow water to be pumped in and out. Unfortunately these aren’t held often because it causes serious structural damages. Did you know that there are roughly 9 different types of gladiators that all wear different armor and use different weapons? Did you know that one of these types of gladiators boxes with special metal gloves to enhance the chances of getting cut or bleeding. Even though the gladiators all entertain in different ways they all serve the same purpose: to entertain the people. Although the gladiators are all different they all take the sacramentum gladiatorium which states “uri, vinciri, verberari, ferroque necari.” All gladiators attend to a special school, located near the Coliseum, where they are trained hard for lengthy amounts of time. These gladiators are usually slaves, criminals, or prisoners of war, sometimes they are fighting for their freedom or serving a death sentence. Occasionally people, including women (isn’t that so cool, maybe we should try it), actually volunteer to be gladiators because of the benefits, including food, money, and fame.
