Reflection On My Writing Class

Throughout the semester, this course has challenged me to approach topics I was already familiar with in new ways which I may have never explored previously. Though I have always found pleasure in reading and writing, this semester has helped me to find new strategies for approaching reading and writing assignments that may seem more arduous and mundane in nature than the creative writing and free reading that I enjoy. I have certainly found that this semester has significantly improved my writing through suggestions from my instructor and peers alike. Furthermore, my argumentation and discussion skills toward scholarly articles have become refined and helped me to be a precise and critical thinker. The culmination of these skills is presented …show more content…
To combat these issues, I spent a large amount of my planning time in the research phase ‒ brainstorming ideas with mind maps and then doing preliminary searches about the stances people assume on each issue. Once I had decided my topic, I found the research to be straightforward to find and analyze, as the issue is nuanced but also highly debated in modern political discourse. Consequently, the actual drafting of my argument and projects went smoothly and I was able to complete each assignment with relative ease; I sat at my computer and just wrote everything in one sitting. Conversely, editing was a difficult process as the vast majority of my projects began as simple word vomit, which needed extensive edits to clarify my thoughts and the evidence supporting and opposing my argument. This was made increasingly difficult by the lack of constructive criticism from my peers, who noted that my papers often did not need editing. To combat this, I relied on myself to be critical of my work, in addition to the suggestions and edits made by my professor. Despite the taxing nature of my editing and brainstorming processes, I felt that the skills I gained in this course helped me to write cohesive projects that are sophisticated and evidence of my growth as a

In high school I would have considered myself to be a decent writer, not the best or not the worst. I would never impress anyone with my writing skills but I could still come across as educated on my topic.…

Throughout this portfolio I will demonstrate to my instructor and peers my development throughout our course, including the challenges and successes. I hope my portfolio will serve as a helpful source for me to refer back to in future classes, and aid as a guide for future students and their journey through college. In the beginning of first semester, in English Composition 121, I had preconceived ideas as to what the expectations would be for this class based on my experience eleven years ago. I had pre-determined how I would approach this class and what I was going to do, so never once did I expect to learn something useful.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

The University of Washington is a prestigious school with a big campus and an even bigger student body. For me, as a freshman, this was intimidating. Ten weeks ago I walked into my English class loathing the thought of writing paper after paper. The reading I can deal with, but I’ve always detested writing. To this day I procrastinate writing as long as I can.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

Since coming to UCCS my writing has changed quite dramatically. When I enrolled at UCCS I was sure that I would not need to complete any additional English courses. Given, I had previously completed a master’s degree with a CLEP credit for English, but that was not the case. The CLEP I had taken previously did not include the essay portion and did not meet UCCS transfer requirements as a result, I would need to take both ENGL 1300 and ENGL 1305. Looking back, this has been a blessing in disguise.…

On January 17, 2017, my first day of English 106-H, my overall goal for the course was to become a stronger writer in which I could generate clear theses, express my theses in body paragraphs, and create conclusions that are not too repetitive of what I wrote, but still wrap up the entire essay. Before taking this course, I had an extremely hard time generating a thesis, let alone an entire introduction paragraph. Consequently, my papers had no structure from the introduction to form great body paragraphs. Therefore, sometimes it was not clear on what I was writing about from the introduction, leaving the reader confused. I learned through free writing regularly, I can express any and every idea that comes to mind.…

Even before this class, writing has been a significant and amusing element of creating for me, I aspire to be a screenwriter for my own TV and film productions, however, I had a constant feeling of an ungoverned order within my writing. Despite how difficult it is for me, I never stopped writing, in fact, as required, I took numerous English classes and I attempt to take elements of my teachings outside of the classroom with me, so I can increase the quality of my work. During this fall semester, the textbook that was used for this class: (From Inquiry to Academic Writing), allowed me to put basic elements of writing into perspective and helped me me think critically about various literary works and other forms of creation beyond literature.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

I had never taken a course that involved writing a paper and then presenting a speech on it to the class. It was either one or the other, not both.
