In the article, Recycling: The Big Picture by Tom Zeller, Jr. on National Geographic Staff, some are wondering if recycling is a benefit, because transporting the materials creates more carbon dioxide in the air. The answer is yes, recycling does benefit us, and cities are getting better at reducing the costs of recycling. Everything we buy took a lot of resources to make, but recycling, or replacing new materials with ones that have already been used, saves resources, reduces waste that we put out, and reduces pollution and the demand for energy.
