Why Should You Recycle?
Have you ever thought about how much energy and resources are wasted everyday? Lots of people don’t realize how much of an impact they have on the earth. Every day the earth is polluted in many different ways such as air or water pollution. This is slowly taking away the resources and energy needed to make the world a safe place for people to live in. So why not just start recycling? Recycling is a way of reusing things like plastic bottles or an old newspaper. Some people help contribute by reusing their old things over and over, but others just use a recycling bin. If we were to make recycling mandatory we could a place to cash in your recyclable cans and bottles in every grocery store or supermarket. This may not seem like a lot of money if you are only turning in a few cans, but the more you recycle the more money you can earn. Another thing most people don’t know is that recycling can generate lots of energy that cost less than the typical energy generated from factories. Statistics from “Is Recycling Worth it” by Joanna Poncavage shows that recycling just ten glass containers can save enough energy to operate a television for two hours and thirteen minutes and recycling just six aluminum cans saves enough energy to power an air conditioner for one hour, or a laptop computer for 31 hours. There is only a limited amount of space to make landfills and even though we have a lot of that space now we might not have that same space a few years from now. If we start recycling now before we have no more space it will save a lot of unneeded stress for everyone. Also the space that people reserve for landfills could be used in a more productive way that could benefit to our societies. Another reason people say that we should not have mandatory recycling is that it will save people time to just throw their trash away. It really doesn’t take that much time to put you plastic bottles inside the recycling bin and on trash day take it out to your front yard with your regular trash. There was a survey in 2005 that said 98 percent of Seattle households participate in the curbside recycling program, and that only 16 minutes are spent recycling in each household. What are those 16 minutes spent doing? Sorting, extracting, rinsing, bundling, and stomping. These are easy things that everyone can do, if you get more people in your house to help it could go by even faster. People are used to not recycling because they have never been forced to, but if everyone put recycling into their daily routine it would be a habit and not a
