Recognizing and Overcoming Obstacles in the Pursuit of My Dream Job I used to work as an accounting assistant for a company called corporate aircraft. After working there for three years, I was laid off. The company was growing and I was not equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to continue as an accounting assistant. When I began searching for another job, I quickly realized that I needed an associate degree, at the very least, in order to compete for a good paying position. I could have found a job paying $9.00 an hour, which is what I was averaging on unemployment. That’s when I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to pursue a college degree. Lack of confidence is an obstacle in any career. I believe that a college degree will equip me not only with the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in an accounting career, but also with the confidence to help me succeed in any career that I choose. In her article, “Five Career Challenges You May Face,” career and leadership coach Marcia Zidle proclaims that by increasing self-awareness, choosing to embrace change, and building and leveraging networks one can successfully deal with career challenges. I believe that my experience as a student has helped me gain a deeper understanding of how I react to challenges and stress.
