Today, more and more people are being to question if attaining a degree really worth it or if it is not really needed. The primary reason of going to college is to obtain one’s dream job in the future. College is a stepping stone as it prepares one with academic knowledge in order to succeed in the future. Although, attending a college and receiving a degree does not necessarily guarantee that an individual is going to get a job right after graduation. Many students feel that college is a waste of money because they do not learn what they want to. Instead, they are forced to take general classes in order to fulfill a general educational requirement. A degree may cost a lot, but it gives you access to higher-paying jobs when you graduate. Most higher education programs, such as those for law, medicine, and education, won’t let one start without a college degree. Many business, professional, and government jobs won’t accept resumes from applicants who did not go to college, no matter how qualified they are. Without a college degree, one may be held back from advancement in one’s company simply because they do not fit the education requirements for the position. . In the article “Is College worth the Money” the author Stephen Emerson states, “It should shape you values and your ambitions, as well as provide you with analytical skills sets you will need to achieve and sustain those ambitions” (119-120). College definitely has its pros and cons. In the past, students who attended college did better than those who did not and this still appears to be the case. Although, companies like Apple were founded by individuals who drop out of college. Some people may have a pessimistic view about it and think that college is a waste of money. Others may look at it as a challenging and exciting new frontier that basically will set the precedent for the rest of one’s life. After all it is one’s own choice whether they commit themselves to purse that degree or choice start working right
