According to the Children’s Bureau (Administration on Children, Youth and Families, Administration for Children and Families) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “For 2014, a nationally estimated 1,580 children died of abuse and neglect at a rate of 2.13 per 100,000 children in the national population” (Greenberg & Lopez, 2014). In my opinion, this statistic is outrageous for a nation that prides itself in being the land of the free. The fatalities that have occurred from child abuse and neglect do not represent freedom at all. There are a number of human services professionals dedicating their careers to helping and healing abused and neglected children. I believe it is my calling to join these professionals in the fight to advocate for and provide assistance to abused and neglected children. This is the main reason that I am pursuing a Master of Social Work. I have a passion for helping others, but I believe I have also been called to help children in need. In addition, I believe that pursuing a Master of Social Work will provide for more job opportunities in the child welfare field, the opportunity to receive further education of the social work field and the possibility to teach in higher education. By pursuing a Master of Social Work, I will have more job opportunities available to me compared to if I just had a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work.
