What illusions does the fast food industry create?
To paraphrase Schlosser the fast food industry creates the illusion that more time and a cheaper cost is better than the quality of the food being put into the bodies of a society. In chapter 9 “What’s in the meat” Schlosser reveals that, “Instead of focusing on the primary causes of meat contamination- the feed being given to the cattle, the overcrowding at feedlots, the poor sanitation at slaughterhouses, excessive line speeds, poorly trained workers, the lack of stringent government oversight- the meatpacking industry and the USDA are now advocating an exotic technological solution to the problem of food borne pathogens. They want to irradiate the nation’s meat” This quote exhibits that the meatpacking industry is just not as high-minded as it used to be before the twenty-first century because instead of figuring out what is wrong with the meat packing industry and figuring out why there are so many cases of food borne pathogens;

Which is so much worse than identifying the real issue. This idea of the lesser of the two evils only reveals that the fast food industry prioritizes a cheap meat to a healthy meat because it costs less and takes less time to make and deliver. To correlate the issue of the meat packing industry to something bigger it is essential to connect Schlosser’s ideas of fast food industries and their relationship with the meat packing industry. Shlosser verifies that, “McDonald’s is the nations largest purchaser of beef, pork, and potatoes-“ Because McDonalds is the largest purchaser of meat in the nation, it is implied that McDonalds is enabling the meat packing industry to deliver unhealthy and unsanitary meat to the company because McDonalds is not requiring safe and clean meat. This only proves that the fast food industry is prioritizing cheap meat that gets to where they need quickly rather than prioritizing healthy and
