My professional presence is focused on mindfulness, more in line with Era II than Era I, and focuses on the mind and body of a patient to create an environment for healing. My belief is that by being mindful for a patient’s emotion and physical needs and situation you can direct healing in a way that contributes and expands the patient’s ability to heal. By doing this I believe nurses play an integral role in the process or healing. My professional presence influences every minute or every day I work.
In my work in progressive care our floors main focus is on Cardiac patients. We get post stent placements and pacemakers, patients with abnormal rhythms, patients complaining of chest pain with an unknown cause, heart failure patients and many others. Issues with the heart have a lot to do with stress in many cases. For some patients merely talking about their issues is enough to lower their blood pressure and heart rate. For others it is takes careful listening to understand why a patient is having diet issues, inadequate fluid intakes, a non-healing diabetic ulcer or other ailments. If you can understand and attempt to help them find other means to address issues both physical and mental you become part of a major step in a patient’s recovery. They are not very comfortable winging it or blazing new trails; working steadily within the system is the Guardian way, for in the long run loyalty, discipline, and teamwork get the job done right. Guardians are meticulous about schedules and have a sharp eye for proper procedures. They are cautious about change, even though they know that change can be healthy for an institution. Better to go slowly, they say, and look before you leap.
Guardians make up as much as 40 to 45 percent of the population, and a good thing, because they usually end up doing all the indispensable but thankless jobs everyone else takes for granted.
Establishing and following a familiar daily routine is critical to your well being. In your ideal job, you and your coworkers would all share information so that everyone could remain "on the same page” as projects move forward. Because you genuinely care about the people you work with, your colleagues and your customers appreciate your unassuming kindness.
