In 2012, Roberto Flores De Apadaca, ent. al (Apodaca, Brighton, Perkins, Jackson, & Steege, 2012) state that the schools that are more prone to having a shooting or violent act occur within them are the ones that contain the following factors, environmental factors such as vandalism, chaotic and overcrowded hallways, student behavior such as cliques, the behavior of staff and faculty members such as scolding students in the public and allowing bullying to occur within the school; Exposure to violence, and lethal weapons are also contributing factors. To establish a relationship staff can let students know that they are welcome to speak to them if they need to about anything. Some students do not have strong support systems within their households; so to have an adult figure to speak to that is understanding can prevent students from feeling overwhelmed about certain situations that could affect them. To discourage teasing as well as bullying anyone in the school could do this by stopping and addressing it if they saw it in progress (Review, 2013, pg.6). By allowing bullying to occur, it is providing the perpetrator with more opportunities to antagonize the student body. A final thing is to end the “code of silence” (Reveiw, 2013, p. 6), by encouraging students to report any dangerous acts, and to do it in a discrete manner so that it would not cause them to be bullied or ridiculed for being safe.
