Thesis: School shootings, and the medias portrayal of such events have had a negative impact on children and adults alike. However, there are documented characteristics and risk factors associated with persons identified as shooters that may indicate potential problems prior to an event.

Characteristics of shooters.
a. Many shooters have common traits
1. Most of the shooters tend to be white males, with no history of violent behaviors or criminal activity
2. Many shooters lived in stable homes, with two- parents being present but with low emotional attachment, and inconsistent disciplinarians.
3. Commonly are subjects of bullying and show signs of depression
Transition: Now that I have discussed the characteristics many school shooters have in common, let’s look at some risk factors schools have in common that make them more susceptible to shootings.
II. Risk factors for schools
A. With higher rates of crime, drugs, alcohol, and teen pregnancy schools are having to adapt to the new environment that is the most unsafe than any other point in history
1. In recent years, there has been a decrease in federal funds that aimed to improve security at schools has been decreased
2. The structures of some schools which have many points of entry have a lack of security
3. There is a gap in the rapport of school administration and local police
