Pltw Reflection Paper

This week in third grade was very different, it was a short week due to our professional development. Monday was a normal day starting with our spelling unit which I have already taken over. I am still helping the students work through the first day by explaining the skill. This week I asked students to work on day two independently and turn it in when they finished. I was noticing that students were not doing the work and waiting to fill it in until we went over it as a class. After they were asked to turn it in and work finish/make changes during their ILT I noticed the next day they worked harder. I think I will ask them to turn this in everyday and I will look over it. I need to get better at making sure my students are fully understanding the skill each day before I just ask them to keep moving through a skill they do not understand. I had so much fun learning from all of the other schools. On Thursday we had a Marker Space Training, within our own school from Katie Fisher, our librarian. This training took us through what our students will be creating this year. We made our very own set of Google Glasses and took a virtual reality tour. We then talked about how in our school system many of our students will never be out of the state and have no scheme. This new tool can be used when we explore flight in PLTW. We can have students take a VR ride on a plane in order to fully understand what it is line. This was such a learning experience for me because I love science and I wanted to see how our students will be challenged. After this training I stayed and talked with Mrs. Fisher and we have now started a cross curriculum unit on bridges. We will be reading Pops bridges and then creating bridges using our new knowledge. This will be our STEM project for the quarter. I cannot wait to see where my students will go and if this will help them understand science and reading in a different

Psychology 201 has been a very intriguing course for me so far. I really enjoyed learning about how the brain works and how big of a role it plays in our lives. Some specific areas of psychology I enjoyed studying were Operant Conditioning, the theories of motivation, and Jean-Dominique Bauby. Operant Conditioning was a familiar concept, even though I was not familiar with the specific terminology. I think reinforcement and punishment are very interesting topics that apply to everyone's lives.…

Summary of Activities Outside of our meeting on Sunday October 8th, I spent an hour looking up registration letters online, just to see what other examples are available. I was amazed at how many different registration styles there were. I coordinated with my classmates on clip art for the registration letter and downloaded the sample my professor uploaded for us. I completed the letter and I believe it’s perfect. I can’t wait for everyone to see it also.…

In January 2016, 637,067 homeless citizens were accounted for in the US. Out of those 637,067, 4,000 were accounted for in Virginia. Homelessness in Virginia has gone up 4.2% in the last three years. Aren’t those facts just a bit unsettling? When I heard we had to a Capstone Project, I knew homelessness in VA had to be incorporated into my project.…

Summary of KINS 470 For most classes, the main portion of the class is lecture, and then there may be a lab attached to go along with what is learned. Exercise Science Lab was different than any other class that I have taken in the exercise science curriculum. The entire class was a lab class itself. The lecture was very minimum, and most of the time spent was conducting tests and collecting data.…

Friday and Wednesday’s gallery walk was a huge learning experience. I learned so much about topics that I didn’t know anything about like Kent State, The Space Race and the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. When I was presenting I loved seeing how interested people were in my topic as was I. People had so many questions and it was great to be able to know so much and answer them. My topic was the John F. Kennedy assassination.…

I had the pleasure of attending the first Asa Gray picnic of the year. The activity was supposed to be held at Utica College’s Rose Garden from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm on September thirtieth, but it regrettably was rained out, and the event was instead held in the Donahue Auditorium at the same time and on the same day. I had a lot of fun at this activity, and I look forward to attending more Asa Gray meetings in the future due to this event. After much deliberation on my part, I ultimately decided to participate in this activity because it seemed like fun, and I wanted to meet some of the other science majors. In the beginning, I had no intention of going to the picnic, but my twin sister Skylar is a biology major, so it was mandatory for her…

This week’s tutoring session required me to work with a third grade girl. She needed help on her spelling words, because she had an upcoming spelling test that week. We started going over the spelling words, but she was taking a long time to answer me. The next alternative we chose to do was I call them out to her and she writes them on a paper.…

Elliott 10/30 Like always, “Walk Through” was very fun and informative. The presenter was optimistic and made it interesting for everyone, while teaching us a lot. Even though the performance was over 2 hours, the presenter still entertained us the whole time and there wasn’t one time where we got bored. The points system added just the right touch of friendly competition, and encouraged kids to memorize their parts and be enthusiastic during the whole time. The truth is, there was nothing the “Walk Through” presenter to do to make it more entertaining.…

English 106 was the first real college class that I ever stepped foot in, and because of that, I was extremely nervous and unsure. The English teachers at my high school always said that the papers they assigned were held to college standards, and I always did well on those assignments, but I was still unsure about this course. I expected this course to be loaded with reading and writing assignments that would make me pull all-nighters on a regular basis. After going through English 106, I realized that there were not too many assignments and that I learned a lot from each one. To me, the most salient parts of this course were the discourse community paper, the annotated bibliography, the art analysis, peer reviews, revisions, and reflections.…
