Tutoring Session Analysis

This week’s tutoring session required me to work with a third grade girl. She needed help on her spelling words, because she had an upcoming spelling test that week. We started going over the spelling words, but she was taking a long time to answer me. The next alternative we chose to do was I call them out to her and she writes them on a paper. That was a huge difference in quickness. I tried to help her out as much as possible, but I could tell she did not care as much as she needed to about making good grade on the test. As time ran out, I noticed we did not get to finish all the words on the list. I encouraged her to take the spelling words home and study continuously until she knew them all. I would not change anything about the tutoring session. I only wish I had more time with her. She had the potential to finish the test, but we ran out of time. I wish she wanted to study with me, but I have to remember in my mind, she is a third grader. School and test are not her favorite things to do on a daily basis. Being in a classroom with other children studying as well was not helpful, because they seemed to want to watch everyone else but the teacher. My overall experience of the tutoring was great. I have really enjoyed getting to know the children at the Boys and Girls Club. It has helped me gain patience with the young children and helped me understand the importance of teaching and tutoring. The only information I would share is that this week was better for me. Looking back on last week’s session, I have gained trust from the children, that they now see me as a teacher instead of a random girl coming to their center every

The 4-hour block group lesson presentation went ok. I believe that the message was received, even though few things didn’t go the way I wanted them to go. The strengths of the lesson were probably when everyone understood how the program works and its pros and cons. Instead the areas that needed improvement were, the icebreaker, it wasn’t supposed to be assigned a letter, but anyone had to keep going with the alphabet being careful to not repeat the letter, but my partner forgot about it. Then, the grammar wall, maybe needed to be easier, less words and still sending the same message.…

The post assessment “Where Do People Live” form the QRI-5 resource book. This is an expository text about country, city, and suburb living. She scored a 50% on the concept questions showing unfamiliarity with the subject matter. Unfortunately this was the test I had so I administered it assuming I may have to re-evaluate another day. When she read there was only one miscue in the text, moving a period from one side of the word “too” to the other.…

I took that passage and stayed with fluency and comprehension, but I also added in learning strategies for difficult vocabulary terms that are in the passage. Pre-Assessment: The student will read the Susan B. Anthony article in one minute. The teacher will high-light each of the words that were incorrect in that one minute and add up how many words the student read correctly.…

The ten given tips mentioned in the video all seemed to be very effective ones to implement in the classroom if done correctly. Classroom management is crucial, and can definitely make a difference in-between a well ran room and a chaotic classroom. The first tip mentioned was beginning the year tough. I definitely believe teachers have to set the stage of what is expected and stand their ground to instill the procedures and expectations into the students, but this should also not be taken to extreme measures where students are uncomfortable or scared to be in the class. Also, it’s easier for the teacher to set certain procedures such as bathroom signals, attention grabbers, or classroom rules at the beginning of the year so the students know…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…

During my CSL I have learned four very important things that I will use every day in my teaching career. I learned the importance of knowing students names and the importance of not ignoring the little things. I also learned that it is okay to tell students their work is not good enough and that having high expectations for students will help them grow as learners. Of course I have learned many other small things, but the above mentioned four are in my opinion the most influential for my future career teaching.…
