Today I will be interviewing Lucy Gallo, a 67 Hispanic women, born in Puerto Rico. She has been living in the main land of the United State for the last 50 years. Lucy has 3 children and 4 grandchildren, ranging from 2 to 27 years of age.

She describes herself as Hispanic and doesn’t see any difference from ethnic and race. When Lucy attended school in Puerto Rico, not all children could go to school, the few children that would be permitted to attend school where all from the same neighborhood and race, many from the same neighborhood. She says there was no time for play when she was a child. They lived in a farm where you worked the land before and after going to school. The women also had the responsibility to cook and clean. Lucy parents did not agree with dating outside of your race. Lucy had two children outside of race. She attempted to keep this secrete from her mother, father and family, but it was very difficult, due to the one child appearance. Betsy her oldest daughter had her father pal skin, light eyes and straight hair. Eventually her secretes came out since she had dark curly hair, dark eyes and darker skin tone. When her parents first found out they won’t speak to her. They disagreed but eventually adjusted their way of thinking throughout the years. Her father who died at the age of 99 never

She went and worked in a factory, went and got her GED, attended college and worked in real estate for years before retiring. She has high expectation of her children, she expected them to graduate from High School, which they all did.     By refusing to read her mother’s letters, Lucy attempts to serve her correspondence and therefore her relationship with her mother. It is clear that Lucy cannot separate from her mother because she keeps all the letters instead of destroying them. Lucy carries the letters from her family inside her brassiere and describes them as “scorching her breasts” (20). The word “scorning” indicates that those letters that her mother writes to her has become attached to her body and that her mother is part of her.
