Ecological Transition

While taking the Foundations of Language, Literacy and Culture course we had to complete a PBA on a student that we had in class. Then we had to make a complete biography on the student’s culture and link it to the topics we had been covering in class. I selected this as my artifact for standard 3.a because through completing this assignment I began to question the supports she was receiving based on feedback from other teachers. The student I chose was a girl I would have never guessed grew up in Mexico. She is a US citizen but because of her family living in Mexico for most of the past 16 years returning only long enough to renew visas. Getting to know her taught me a lot about my own bias and in turn allowed me to deepen the planning …show more content…
“An ecological transition occurs whenever a person’s position in the ecological environment is altered as the result of a change in role, setting or both,”(Brondenbrenner p. 26). I see this in my students now as well many of them have relocated several times and because of this their skill levels in language and content are behind where they ideally would be. I now plan for this type of student in my classroom. I support content with visuals and readings of various levels of ability that cover the same content. I allow my students to speak to each other in Spanish as a support to what they are learning however, when they are participating in class discussions I provide them with a higher order thinking wheel and a few minutes of prep time then require them to participate in English. By doing this I believe they will begin to enhance their …show more content…
I do not teach English I teach Biology therefore I should be focused on whether or not my students are achieving the content from my class. I have struggled with doing this in my classes though because our school has such a push for improving writing skills. What I have done to combat this is I include in my rubrics that they need to include proper grammar. Then when grading the students papers I look at their skill level and tailor grading to what I should expect at their current ability level. Then I pick one item that would push their writing to the next level and make corrections on that one specific part of grammar. After they receive this feedback the routine in my classroom shows that I then expect to see that in their next writing task. This way I can show that they are growing in writing but it does not drastically impact my students

As a freshman in the EC program at Center Grove High School, I wanted to address the controversial topic of whether or not Sonia Nazario’s memoir Enrique’s Journey. I believe that the high school curriculum should include Sonia Nazario’s memoir Enrique’s Journey because it teaches students to appreciate the things they have, and in addition it informs students about the dangers and problems of immigration they never knew.…

On May 20, 2016, my adviser and I sat down to have a discussion about the university required courses and courses that was mandatory for the Liberal Arts college. English 101 was one of the classes I chose to take my first semester because I knew I had more knowledge on writing efficient papers because of my previous AP English courses in high school. In high school, I was always told that I was an adequate writer because I knew the basic of connecting ideas that provided a clear concrete understanding. However, the only time I received an unsatisfactory score was when the information I included in my paper was unorganized. Also, another reason I chose to take English my first semester instead of my second semester was because I knew I needed…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

The importance of using L1 to benefit L2 is essential for student success. In this paper, I will argue that we need to acknowledge students L1 as resource by drawing upon course texts, such as Hornberger and Link, Huff Post and the video about “The Benefits of a Bilingual Brain”. First of all, understanding a bilingual brain is essential in order to recognize its relevance in using L1 to acquire L2. Nacamulli mentions that there are three types of bilingual people: Compound bilingual, Coordinate bilingual, and Subordinate bilingual.…

What is more important is that students practice writing. Teachers also need to devote time to feedback through individual sessions or “conferences”. There are typically two types of conferences: a content conference in which the teacher asks the student about his or her story and a skill conference where the teacher emphasizes basic writing skills such as spelling, punctuation and…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

When I look up the difficult word, I would find the closest appropriate definition.…
