But as the years went by farming practices are becoming more and more advanced. So know when a pheasant could rely on the waste grain from a corn field and the buffer strips to provide food and cover. It can't, farming has become so advanced that the amount of the crop lost is so minimal is really doesnt help any animals. Along with the fact that most crop fields are barren of any weeds, That also provided food and cover so there are less and less spots where pheasant can have the food from the row crops and cover from the buffer strips. These new farming practices are not helping contribute to the decreasing pheasant numbers. Being noticed all around the country is in the last years. Here at the Denmark we are fortunate enough to have a nature center which this last spring we had performed a controlled burn in the large prairie. After the burn which was already very good habitat grow up to be very lush, with grass and native plants reaching six plus feet.but not only was there perfect grassland habitat but there in a pond, mixed wetland, pine plantation and and ag fields.with this great mix of habitat and the minimal human traffic makes this a perfect and safe place for the pheasant poults to live and hopefully …show more content…
Knowing that a pheasant can travel up to 10 miles the bird might have just moved out to an area where I can not look. Or I might not be looking in the correct spot the bird may be out feeding at the times I come through , or they might also might be not wanting to fly which is also a good possibility. As when trying to catch a poult that escaped he would not fly for the fact that it learned very quickly we could not ran as fast as him in a standing wheat field and that if he held still we could not see him. Then there is also the sad thing that there was just to many predators and the poult were quickly eaten. It could have also been the weather with some very cold temperatures that could have be detrimental to the poults drinking or freezing to death. Also another limiting factor was amount of time I could look for the poults. I tried about once a week till about november and then about once a month the rest of the year to go look for poults. And With this there is also the chance that the poults found better habitat and cover. This project will be continued for a few years this next there will be so more changes including the changing of where the pheasants will be released. I will be changing from the denmark nature center to the woods and fields behind my house where I will have more land to monitor and can easily keep in contact with
