The Carolina Parakeet, a poisonous bird, was home to Southern New York, Wisconsin, and the Gulf of Mexico. This neotropical parakeet was composed of many colors and included a thick and pale beak, which was used as a third limb to do activities such as climbing trees. Its body was green and it had an orange face and a yellow head. Although this parrot is the only member of its genus,Conuropsis, it is composed of many traits that are very similar to members of the genus, Aratinga. These two genera are known to be close relatives. The closest bird to the Carolina Parakeet is the Myiopsitta Monachus because they are composed of similar physical features such as their feathers and nostrils. Since the Carolina Parakeet was very turbulent with its continuous chattering, it could be heard from two miles away. This Parakeet lived in habitats such as forests, wooded river bottoms, and the fields of agriculture. It frequently ate many types of wild fruit, seed, and nuts. For example, flocks of Carolina Parakeets used to get shot by humans because of their boisterous chattering. By making loud sounds, these birds were in danger of getting shot. Another reason this sole parakeet is no longer in existence is to provide space for agriculture. Because of the need for agricultural lands, forests areas were cut down, which lead to many birds losing their homes. One more explanation for this extinction was because farmers saw Carolina Parakeets as pests and found it difficult to keep them tame so they decided to kill these innocent birds. Even though the last Carolina Parakeet died on February 21, 1918 at the Cincinnati Zoo, the extinction of this type of parrot wasn’t approved until the year 1939.
