Commercials are both a literal and figurative selling point for a product. By creating a commercial, consumers are exposed to the product in the way the producers want it to be viewed. Therefore, this allows the producer to create a commercial that has a certain aesthetic that will capture the attention of a certain targeted audience. For the commercial to be successful it needs to connect with the audience in some way, this will make them feel more motivated to buy the product. In 2015, One Direction debuted their fourth perfume with a commercial that not only told a story but also made the product look made exclusively for the consumer. By using persuasive techniques disguised in the video the band was effective in reaching the target audience and beyond. …show more content…
The Between Us commercial begins with the most popular singer of the band, Harry Styles, rushing in with a freesia plant of which he handpicked from the highest mountain (Fanpop, Inc.). Since the entrance is so dramatic with the mention of a unique flower in an unexpected location, it works as a hook for the audience to want to keep watching. Next, Liam Payne brings in amber from the deepest ocean, followed by Louis Tomlinson bringing in an apricot from space. Lastly, Niall Horan appears to be unprepared with an onion until he holds the onion to his eye to release a tear into the perfume bottle. Although there is humor in the extremes that the commercial demonstrated, it has an underlying connection with the fanbase. In the advertisement, it told a story like an audience is getting an inside look at what the creation process of the perfume looked like.
