Persuasive Speech On Legalizing Marijuana

Many of you have or will come into contact with alcohol, tobacco, or cannabis at some point in your lifetime. These three substances are among the most frequently used recreational substances in the world. Alcohol is ranked first on the scale of popularity, tobacco is second, and cannabis is third. The main difference between the the top two and cannabis, however, happens to be legality. There are age restrictions on alcohol and tobacco, but once you reach the legal age, you have the freedom to purchase and consume as much of the substances as you want. Cannabis possession and consumption, on the other hand, is illegal in the majority of places. Cannabis use has been frowned upon by society for decades due to myths surrounding it. Many opposers argue that it is a brain-damaging, addictive, and harmful gateway drug that negatively affects a person’s overall health and well-being. However, many of these myths have been proven to be inaccurate. The world as a whole should legalize the selling, purchasing, and recreational use of cannabis while also informing the public on its use and debunking the common misconceptions surrounding it.

Keeping cannabis illegal has many harmful effects on our country. When it is illegal, organized, drug-related criminals are provided with a means of income. When these criminals have steady income, they are able to purchase more drugs to dispense to the interested public. Drug dealers often push harder drugs such as cocaine and heroin on people who are just coming to them for marijuana. If cannabis is legalized universally, people would not buy it from these dangerous and untrustworthy dealers.
