A majority of American citizens support the legalization of marijuana, but do not want it smoked in public. A study done by Pew Research Center says forty-four percent of Americans want it to be illegal and fifty-three percent say marijuana should be legalized. This means Americans are in favorite of the drug being legal by a slim margin. The same study also states that if the drugs were legal and it was smoked in public it would bother sixty-two percent of Americans. In Colorado, over two million dollars in taxes from recreational sales were made just in the month of January. This statistic shows it can benefit the state in a short period of time. Also, an estimated two hundred eighty-eight million dollars in sales and thirty-seven million dollars in tax revenue has been gained from the three hundred recreational dispensaries the state of Colorado has licensed.
