She worked two jobs to help provide for us, so these medical problems were anything but convenient. Every night, she came home in pain; she lost her ability to work at the hospital and eventually lost the ability to be an EMT. With all this, she felt as if she was failing at being a mother, and hit a severe state of depression. She fell behind on housework, and even found it difficult to get out of bed. These changes put as much stress on the family as it did her. My father began working more hours, and doing more side jobs to bring in more income; my older brother began cooking meals and taking care of my sister and I. Eventually, she started abusing her medications, and never seemed to break the hold they had on her. Naturally, this drove my father to divorcing her. The divorce took almost two years to finalize; there was not one good day during the divorce. The custody battle seemed endless, until finally, my father gained custody of me and my mother gained custody of my siblings. Despite living with my father, my mother and I remained very close. As her addiction got worse, so did her health. Her previous medical conditions progressed, and she gained new ones as well. She developed a pinched nerve in the cervical area of her spine, causing her to need surgery to correct it. The surgery was performed from the front of her neck by moving her esophagus over. Her past with anorexia and acid reflux made the surgery risky; they were concerned with how eroded her esophagus was, and feared it would be damaged during surgery.
