Personal Narrative: The Car Radio

Improved Essays
Back in the 1930’s our great-grandparents were tuning in on their Motorola. In the 1980s our parents popped in their favorite cassette tape. And today our backseat passengers are asking to ‘pass the aux’. Making their first debut back in the 1930’s the car radio has been distracting drivers of all ages from focusing on a safe and cautious driving environment. Early in it’s existence and to this day, the car radio is branded to be the most distracting feature available in a car.

While in the car, no matter the occasion I always find myself turning on the radio. Whether I am riding by myself and I need something to fill the empty sound, or if I turn it on to fill in the dead air time in between conversations I have with other passengers in

But there are precautions and actions we can take to ensure that it is less distracting for both the driver and the passengers. Whenever I am driving with my friends I always turn down the radio. Having the volume at a high distracting level is dangerous for not only me, but the passengers in the car, and those on the road around me. At first my friends are hesitant in following my lead, but with persistence, I ensure that the radio volume is kept at a low non-distracting level. Sometimes promoting safe driving is deemed to be the cool thing to do, but it is certainly the right thing. By ensuring the volume stays at a lower level, I am protecting the lives of all of those around me.

I believe that I deserve this scholarship because I always advocate for what I believe in- this is no exception when it comes to safe driving, this goes to the extent of my friends calling me “dad” whenever we are in the car since I am always cautious of those around me. These qualities of promoting safe driving with a combination of my academic record and extracurricular involvement are all the reasons why I believe I should receive the Toni Donato-Bolis & Baby RJ Foundation

Distractions are the Devil’s best weapon. Catching up on the social media results for “How to Get Away with Murder” may seem pretty important, but not if the reader is behind the wheel of a car. Taking one’s eyes off the road for just a second could lead to a car accident. As one can see, distractions are not favorable for preserving one’s life and limbs. In one’s daily life, distractions are very much present. In a vehicle, distractions such as the radio, other passengers, and cell phones are constantly thwarting our attention from the road. In the twenty-first century we tend to distract ourselves with technology that keeps us from taking the time to genuinely think, or rather that is what twenty one pilots want you to see. “Car Radio,” written by Tyler Joseph of twenty one pilots, is based from a personal experience Joseph had where his car radio was stolen and the experiences that followed. It, and the associated music video, produce the argument that we need to spend more of our lives in silence rather than surrounded by sound. The rhetoric of twenty one pilot’s “Car Radio” is effective because of emotional appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos.…

When people get into their cars one of the first things they do is reach for the radio. What if that radio wasn’t there? What would they do? People don’t realize but they use the radio to escape having to sit in silence with nothing but their own thoughts. Often times when the mind is left alone to wander it stumbles upon things that people try to push out of their memory and avoid. By using strong imagery, structural devices and sound effects song writer Tyler Joseph of Twentyone Pilots discusses this theme in the song “Car Radio”.…

While driving the passengers that you are surrounded by can become a big distraction. At times they can become too loud or involve the driver in conversations which cause them to become less focused on the road and more focused on what is going on in the car. Passengers also have the ability to control the radio and the volume it is played at. If the radio is too loud it may become harder for the driver to pay attention to the road and what is in front of them. To avoid distractions created by the passengers in the car, it is best for the driver to set rules as to what can go on in the car while it is being driven. The rules are there to help create a safe environment and the best way to avoid life threatening situations.…

I’ve been listening to a lot of Jon & Deek in the morning, and in the mid-afternoon, and early evening. Those two (or one?) have me flipping through channels, seeing if I can remember what station NPR or The Keg is on. All I could remember about a station was “the Eagle is classic rock,” and I spent many minutes at red lights flipping through the country music stations trying to be reunited with my old customary station, only to find myself listening to Will Ferrell screech “SAANNTTAA!” on 94.9’s Christmas ad. Nothing was more brutal, and yet familiar than this. There’s no aux cord in my 2002 Honda, and it spits out cd’s when I put them in, and I can’t make myself realize that I’m not motivated enough to actually listen to NPR on a morning drive, so I resist looking up the tune-in number. Yet, like most loves that are entirely unreasonable, nothing is so precious to me as my car, that subjects me to this routine. Call me Carl, your 40 year old balding neighbor who practically makes love to his car as he “details…

When I ride it's like the earth stops at every corner so I can check to make sure a, loud, car isn't roaring towards me. It's like that feeling in your chest that tells you that everything is going to be ok, yet your mind is screaming at you that it won't be. I ride because I was thought that you need to be active in life, but it was never about the one hour of activity time we are supposed to have growing up. it was much more than that. I didn't need help to ride, I needed help to face down my enemies, or conquer my dreams. But I definitely don't need help to force my two legs to move back and forth with such a momentum that my 2 wheels wobbled underneath my narrow, strong, body. That squeak because who really need brakes to work properly,…

I first realized I was in foreign territory when I witnessed my boss take a drag of a marijuana joint, take a shot of whiskey and walk out of the bar with a girl he had just met at our show. Suddenly, I was thrust into a world I had never experienced before. I was merely a boy surrounded by middle-aged men, who were seasoned veterans in the field of musical touring. The closest person to myself in age was 10 years my elder. I had not known the hardships I would soon be witnessing while out on the road. The trials and tribulations that presented themselves to me, made me grow from a boy to a man, and ultimately eliminate what innocence I had left.…

There are other distractions such as eating, drinking, talking to people in the vehicle, and fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system. Anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving is a distraction. Although teenagers today are aware of the dangers of using their cell phones while driving, they continue to engage in these behaviors. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are approximately 660,000 drivers who use electronic devices while driving during the day. This is very dangerous because their full attention is not on the road, but instead on their device. Texting takes the driver’s attention away from driving more frequently and for longer periods than other distractions. It takes their attention away from driving for a longer period of time because they have to read and process what they received. Other distractions such as eating or fiddling around with the entertainment system can be done while looking at the road. Although these options are not safe either, they are more safe than texting and driving. According to Icebike, 1 out of 4 car accidents in the US are caused by texting while driving. This number may seem low, but once the number is put into perspective it is a…
