Personal Narrative: The Car Radio

Improved Essays
Back in the 1930’s our great-grandparents were tuning in on their Motorola. In the 1980s our parents popped in their favorite cassette tape. And today our backseat passengers are asking to ‘pass the aux’. Making their first debut back in the 1930’s the car radio has been distracting drivers of all ages from focusing on a safe and cautious driving environment. Early in it’s existence and to this day, the car radio is branded to be the most distracting feature available in a car.

While in the car, no matter the occasion I always find myself turning on the radio. Whether I am riding by myself and I need something to fill the empty sound, or if I turn it on to fill in the dead air time in between conversations I have with other passengers in

But there are precautions and actions we can take to ensure that it is less distracting for both the driver and the passengers. Whenever I am driving with my friends I always turn down the radio. Having the volume at a high distracting level is dangerous for not only me, but the passengers in the car, and those on the road around me. At first my friends are hesitant in following my lead, but with persistence, I ensure that the radio volume is kept at a low non-distracting level. Sometimes promoting safe driving is deemed to be the cool thing to do, but it is certainly the right thing. By ensuring the volume stays at a lower level, I am protecting the lives of all of those around me.

I believe that I deserve this scholarship because I always advocate for what I believe in- this is no exception when it comes to safe driving, this goes to the extent of my friends calling me “dad” whenever we are in the car since I am always cautious of those around me. These qualities of promoting safe driving with a combination of my academic record and extracurricular involvement are all the reasons why I believe I should receive the Toni Donato-Bolis & Baby RJ Foundation

In the twenty-first century we tend to distract ourselves with technology that keeps us from taking the time to genuinely think, or rather that is what twenty one pilots want you to see. “Car Radio,” written by Tyler Joseph of twenty one pilots, is based from a personal experience Joseph had where his car radio was stolen and the experiences that followed. It, and the associated music video, produce the argument that we need to spend more of our lives in silence rather than surrounded by sound. The rhetoric of twenty one pilot’s “Car Radio” is effective because of emotional appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos. Twenty one pilots establish their credibility by placing themselves in a place of power and control in their music video for “Car Radio.”…

I’ve been listening to a lot of Jon & Deek in the morning, and in the mid-afternoon, and early evening. Those two (or one?) have me flipping through channels, seeing if I can remember what station NPR or The Keg is on. All I could remember about a station was “the Eagle is classic rock,” and I spent many minutes at red lights flipping through the country music stations trying to be reunited with my old customary station, only to find myself listening to Will Ferrell screech “SAANNTTAA!” on 94.9’s Christmas ad. Nothing was more brutal, and yet familiar than this. There’s no aux cord in my 2002 Honda, and it spits out cd’s when I put them in, and I can’t make myself realize that I’m not motivated enough to actually listen to NPR on a morning drive, so I resist looking up the tune-in number.…

While driving the passengers that you are surrounded by can become a big distraction. At times they can become too loud or involve the driver in conversations which cause them to become less focused on the road and more focused on what is going on in the car. Passengers also have the ability to control the radio and the volume it is played at. If the radio is too loud it may become harder for the driver to pay attention to the road and what is in front of them. To avoid distractions created by the passengers in the car, it is best for the driver to set rules as to what can go on in the car while it is being driven.…

Every time that drivers pick up their phones or check for a text message while on the road, they are tarnishing their pledge to drive safely and responsively. Cell phones have become extremely tempting while driving, and in the same sense extremely deadly. Although some people disagree with making the use of handheld cell phones while driving illegal because they want to be able to use their phones in case of an emergency, it should be against the law to use a handheld device while driving because they are an enormous distraction, they are unnecessary, and they eliminate the driver's ability to react to anything at any moment. First of, cell phones have become one of the biggest distractions to entrap the human race today. Having basically…
