Avoid Distractions and Save Lives Distractions are the Devil’s best weapon. Catching up on the social media results for “How to Get Away with Murder” may seem pretty important, but not if the reader is behind the wheel of a car. Taking one’s eyes off the road for just a second could lead to a car accident. As one can see, distractions are not favorable for preserving one’s life and limbs. In one’s daily life, distractions are very much present. In a vehicle, distractions such as the radio, other passengers, and cell phones are constantly thwarting our attention from the road. People are constantly checking their phones for a text message and have the urge to respond immediately. This is making texting and driving a very severe problem. The use of cell phones while driving should be illegal with strict penalties for infractions regardless of age or experience. Distracted driving is a huge problem today. Distracted driving is anything that causes one to take his/her eyes off the road or lose mental focus while driving. In 2009, 5,474 people were killed due to distracted driving, and almost half a million were injured because of it. Nine hundred and eighty-five of the 5,474 deaths involved the use of a cell phone (Consumer Reports). This is an enormous number of deaths because of cell phone usage while driving. That is why social media posts should be designated to warn people of the dangers of using a cell phone while driving. In the Consumer Reports Survey, sixty-six percent of the 1,026 individuals surveyed claimed that they stopped/reduced any behavior that is considered distracted driving because of reading/hearing about the dangers of distracted driving (Consumer Reports). One simple post on social media sites such as Facebook can prevent some people from texting and driving. A few clicks can go a long way if used
