Personal Narrative: My Medical Mission Trip

Improved Essays
It was the first day of our medical mission trip. The 13 of us were divided into four group: triage, clinic, pharmacy, and faith.

Colin, Laure, and I sat in plastic white lawn chairs, facing the locals who sat on three wooden benches. We had prepared a short, spiritual lesson to bring Jesus’ love to the rural cities of the Dominican Republic. When I welcomed them in their native language, their faces softened. I talked and they understood me. They talked and I understood them. After introducing ourselves, we proceeded with the lesson.

We had made bags of faith bracelets: a simple leather circle with six colored beads. We passed them out to everyone, kids and adults alike. One older lady, sweet, but skeptical, told me she did not want a

If I could do something I've never done before, I would go on a missions trip. I would choose to do this because ever since I was younger, about in seventh grade, I have felt a call to go to Japan and minister. I feel like if God has given me the idea, it is meant to happen sometime in his plan for me. I would also want to go on a missions trip because that is what God has commanded us to do; spread his word. Taking this opportunity and using it to honor God would be just what he would want me to…

Mission's Trip The third week of June, 2015, marks the week my perspective on life changed. This trip contributed to the obliteration of my egotistical state of mind. I went on a prayer tour, spent time at an elderly apartment complex, helped at a community outreach, served at a food bank, and visited a children's learning center. Each of these experiences affected me differently, but were similar in that they all changed my outlook on life.…

This week in clinical I learned in a real life setting about how to properly administer medication. While at clinical, I successfully took vital signs and told my patient that I would return later to give her medication. With my clinical instructor, Elizabeth, we went to the pixus and retrieved the medication. We then returned to the room and I began to open the seal of the pill and my instructor gently told me that I needed to check her wristband prior to taking off the seal . Although, I knew who my patient was because I had checked her wristband earlier it is important to always follow protocol.…

For a child with an interest in all that is scientific and challenging, who finds himself in the realm of math problems and physics theories, who spent his summer days reading books, and pondering on issues that were way beyond him, it was never an easy decision to become a doctor, as a matter of fact, it was scary. I was always wondering, would I ever enjoy this, would I ever be able to meet patients, ask them questions, measure their pulse, or feel their abdomens? would I have what it takes to hold their hands and console them? tell them that I would do everything possible to make them feel better? Those questions haunted me until the very first day I walked into the pediatric ward.…

My first clinical day was an amazing experience, I was able to witness and be a part of a vaginal birth within 10 minutes of starting my clinical. I was surprised by my own reaction to witnessing the birth, since I had never seen one before. My perception of child-birth before hand was that it was a very terrifying event that involved a lot of stress, pain and disorganization. But my experience was completely different from what I thought. The room was dimly light and the mood in the room was very upbeat and relaxed.…

“I know you don’t have a stomachache”, my school dorm warden in India said to me when I tried to reason with her why I can’t go to school. I was in my second grade and it was Parent’s day. Before my tour of St. Jude Hospital, the picture I had painted was that it was a sad and somber place. It was a place full of sick kids. But frankly, my experience there was amazing. I had the pleasure of meeting some great people in Memphis that made me realize what St. Jude represents. It’s a place where so many remarkable advances in children medicine are taking place.…

Lauren, I also felt the same was as you do, but my opinion changed with time. I initially started out my nursing career as an L.V.N. and practiced as a critical care nurse for several years before going back and obtaining my ADN. I believed that I did not learn all that much new material in my program. I attributed that to my years of experience and did not thank all that much about it. I later realized that I had learned a lot more than I wanted to admit.…

Many aspects of myself have changed since those third grade mornings when my entire class fueled their hobbies by researching sports or bugs on the computer program ReadAbout:™ while I continuously searched for articles on brain surgery or the latest medical technology. Since then, I have crafted a spot-on Miranda Sings impression, become a vegetarian, and learned that sports will never be my strong suit as I scored for the opposing team in basketball more than once. Throughout my seventeen years of life, however, one piece of me has remained unchanged. I am not sure where my passion for the medical field stemmed from as my parents are not doctors and going in for a checkup was scarier for my nine year old self than belting out my rendition…

Walking into the emergency department, a sense of angst tingled up my spine and made me alert to the surroundings. It was my first day shadowing a doctor, and I feared I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the fast-paced nature of these white coat wonders. Timidly walking up to the front desk, I informed the nurse of my reason for being here. The young woman standing a few feet away, donned in black scrubs with a chunky laptop in hand, overheard and smiled as she came towards me. She introduced herself and told me she was a scribe assigned to the same doctor for the night.…

Recounting the times where I experience failure was probably in high school. Entering high school I had no clue what was going on. All I knew was that I was going to the medical field which in this case I had to take multiple science classes. I was afraid to talk about my issues with anyone. I had a fear that my friends, family, or whoever I would talk to would disregard my ideas and thoughts on what I must do in the future.…

Medical school is by far one of the most challenging things, if not the most, that I have experienced in my life. It is definitely not a walk in the park, or a spur of the moment thing to do. I feel left behind by my classmates who easily get the topic and ace the quizzes and exams. I envy how they thrive and survive. I envy how they easily do it while I have to maximize my time, sleep later than usual or usually not sleep at all.…
