“I know you don’t have a stomachache”, my school dorm warden in India said to me when I tried to reason with her why I can’t go to school. I was in my second grade and it was Parent’s day. My parents could not make it come that day. I was nervous about going to class without anyone. My warden sat with me started asking questions and she figured out my dilemma. She promised she would be coming with me. At the exact moment, my stomachache went away. I still remember holding my warden’s hand and proudly entering the class. I never missed a class after that. Later after my high school, when I saw her, I decided to ask her about the incident. Her answer is something that stays with me to this day. She told me, my body spoke a different story. I believe such a program will help me to improve the skills that I have gained thus far while being challenged day in and day out to help me gain new clinical skills, that are needed to make a positive impact on my patients’ lives. In the future, I want to work in a clinical and academic multidiscipline practice setting in a suburban area where I would get exposed to a wide variety of cases and can continue to learn from them. I want to bring in my perseverance, compassion, and positivity towards my residency program. I never was the most confident person when it came to competing. I always felt discouraged because I “knew” there would be people better than me. Towards the end of my junior year in high school a special program was announced to the students. “Doc Prep” was a weeklong trip to Baylor College of Medicine that gave ten students the opportunity to witness heart surgeries, practice suturing, handle human brains, and meet many interesting people. Who wouldn’t want to be part of this enriching experience?…

They call them “Tap-taps,” the brightly painted open back trucks that transport passengers through the dusty streets of Haiti. A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. I noticed the adult sitting uncomfortably, a towel wrapping his foot, as his eyes scanned around the room.…

All the blood my heart was pumping it was going directly my ears and during that moment, I did not know what to expect and all I could think was about how to make it through this day. I never asked for any of this. I left friends and my family behind to start a new life, an opportunity for education that I did not have in my hometown of Bani in the Dominican Republic. I was still in shock, preparing myself mentally while my sister put her coat on before getting on the bus. When we arrived in William H. Ohrenberger Elementary, we were introduced to the principal and my first thought was: “Oh my god, my nightmare will start at this moment”.…

Most little girls dream of being a ballerina when they grow up, I was the little girl who dreamed of medical school. Anyone who was brave enough to ask got my vehement no when asked if I thought that the college, subsequent medical school, and training would be too much school or that I would get bored. I decided very early that to be a doctor was one of the most exciting things that a person could chose to be and my fantastic pediatrician was the initial spark for this love of medicine. The care that I could see him exhibit in his daily operations as well as the ease at which he interacted with patients and parents alike inspired me. His knowledge was fascinating and I longed to have that level of understanding of the human body.…

I found an old friend that I knew from elementary school at a small table, and we started talking. He helped me out with where I need to go, informed me on what the school was like. We caught up, and at that point my head wasn’t spinning from confusion.…

My Ob clinical rotation at PSL was an educational and overall a great opportunity. Throughout the 4 days I was at this facility I had opportunities to work with a few patients with different pregnancy complications. One patient I cared for and performed various nursing skills on had HTN superimposed preeclampsia. This experience compared to other experiences has taught me how important it is to be a critical thinker while caring for patients. So many other complications can occur with preeclampsia, putting mom and baby at risk for injury, so this was a very challenging patient and preventing complications or harm was most important.…

By the first 4 ½ weeks of school we got our progress reports, as the teacher called my name, he looked at my grades and had a disturbing facial expression on his face and handed me my paper. When I looked at my grades, it was like the teacher passed the face to me. I couldn’t believe it, 1 A, 4 C’s, and 2 F’s! So instantly I went to all my teachers before we left for our buses, I knew I didn’t have to visit the class I had an A in.…

Since age fourteen, I spent the majority of my summer vacations working as an ophthalmic technician in my father’s practice. To this day he claims he asked me to work with him because the office was short-staffed, but I suspect he knew I would fall in love with ophthalmology just as he did. On my first day seeing post-operative patients, a woman was so moved by her improved vision that she began to cry. She grasped my father’s hand while she thanked us all. I felt honored to witness such a profound expression of joy, and at that moment I committed myself to pursuing a career in ophthalmology.…

“There is no profession as noble as a doctor’s profession,” my mother told me when I was a kid. As I grew older and read ‘The oath of Hippocrates’, I understood the notion that doctors are altruists who dedicate their lives for treating ailing humans. I decided to pursue medicine as my career in eighth grade when I lost my aunt to pancreatic cancer. Being closely involved in her hospitalization, I observed doctors doing their best to treat the sick. This experience had a profound impact on me and it reinforced my belief that there is no greater service than providing healthcare to the sick.…
