Even though I do not remember many things from my childhood, I remember the moment when I met Melvin Miller very clearly. I was only five, and when I walked up to him for the first time I had no clue he would change my life forever. My first moment with Melvin was watching him lay tile. I watched as he very eloquently placed each piece of porcelain and grout on the floor in a way that I had never seen before. I was immediately captivated. Shortly after, he sat down with my dad and I and asked us if we would like to come down to his cabin with him and go fishing. I jumped at the opportunity and in two weeks we were driving past brackish marshland and sand knolls to Corpus Christi. On the way we saw flocks of migratory birds and solitary Caracaras. Although I did not know it then, this trip with Melvin would end up defining almost all of …show more content…
For instance, I like this city because of the atmosphere in downtown and old Austin. I love going to somewhere where it still feels like old Austin like the Salt Lick BBQ. These places make me like to live in Austin. I also love all the hiking trails and places to be outdoors. But these places become less special when I walk into a place and there are multiple people open carrying guns or with Trump or Hillary shirts. I believe that it is preposterous to go around showing your feelings as if they have no effect on anyone else. These types of people will most likely throw Austin into turmoil and make me want to leave as it makes an amazing place seem awful. If these people continue to shred apart what makes cultures special, the world as a whole will begin to ravel. I also do not like how hot Austin gets in the summer and forces me to either not do anything or go on a trip with my family. I also do not like parts of downtown, where there is always someone smoking or being disruptive. This also ruins the atmosphere of Austin and

Although, one may disagree with Ivins claim on how the stereotypes represent all Texans, she does seek to highlight specific issues dealing with cultural aspects, racism, and political issues in Texas. The drive of Bruce Olson and what he had to go through in his life relates to my life in the way that I want to become a missionary someday. Both my life and his are very different right now, but reading about his life and the things he endured both scares me and brings excitement. The thought of leaving my family and everything I know to go live in a foreign place doesn't exactly sound like something I would volunteer for, but doing the will of God and meeting new people interests me like nothing else. Like Bruce, I am a people-person, I like to be with someone all the time. It scare me to think about how Bruce was so lonely in South America, while he wasn't able to speak very much and communicate with others.…

The “ George Strait –Don’t Mess with Texas” commercial depicts George Strait bargaining with the director about wearing various Texas clothing with brands of the slogan “Don’t Mess With Texas.” In the end, George Strait just throws a paper and states to don’t litter and the slogan “Don’t Mess With Texas.” The advertisement is an example of Texas exaggerating their status as a state rather than generalizing Texas as part of the United States because “the four-word, trademark slogan of the state’s litter prevention program often doubles as a Lone Star statement of pride”(Strayhorn 12-13). The quote agrees with the “Don’t Mess With Texas” commercial with George Strait because the commercial shows the director negotiating with George Strait concerning what Texas clothes he would wear in the commercial which indicates Texas pride about anti-littering in Texas. The “Don’t Mess With Texas” commercial is exemplifying a sense of Texas individualism to stress the fact that Texas won’t tolerate litterers within the…

Long before the current situation, Texas had immigration issues but in contrasting form. Immigration in Texas during the 1830s consisted of “white, English-speaking Americans who were looking for a better life in Texas. And the authorities who were trying to keep them out were Mexican” (Root, 2012). Centuries later this situation evolved into the illegal immigration issue that Texas is dealing with today. What makes this situation more of a controversy now than before is the vast numbers of illegal immigrants seeking a new beginning in Texas and the limited economic resources that are available to support them.…
