Personal Narrative: My Journey At Micah 6: 8 Camp

The purpose of life is “to serve, not to be served.” These words epitomize the lessons and experiences I encountered throughout my journey at the Micah 6:8 Camp. Every summer since 2012, I have spent one week at a camp in Milwaukee where volunteers feed the homeless and renovate low-income apartment complexes. My parish coordinates the Micah 6:8 Camp to teach children the value of building new relationships and the value of working cooperatively as a team. My experiences at Micah 6:8 Camp had a profound effect on my personal development. Volunteering in Milwaukee provided me with the opportunity to meet many new people. I connected with different tenants living in the low-income apartment complex; two in particular stood out to me, Rosie and Henry. Rosie is a deaf woman who has a zest for life. Because she knew me as the artist, every time she saw me, she painted in the air. She loved watching our projects unfold. Henry, a resident and local artist, watched me paint each year I visited. He eagerly showed me pictures of his art pieces and offered advice to enhance my own creations. As the years passed I learned more and more about Henry, including his love for his grand baby, his wonderful musical talent, and challenges he faced in life. These interactions …show more content…
The connections created with Henry and Rosie reinforced in me the value of listening and communicating. I arrived to the camp without many personal connections and left the experience with many new friends. The mural project provided me with the opportunity to teach volunteers of various artistic abilities, which in turn taught me how to handle difficult situations and how to problem solve. These experiences helped make me a better person and more prepared for similar events in my future. Volunteering paves a two way street to happiness. I improved the lives of the tenants in the Capuchin Apartments, but they helped me even

The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

The books The Contender by Robert Lipsyte and Tunes for Bears to Dance To by Robert Cormier have young male protagonists that share the quality of vulnerability, but not in a troubling way. Their unique yet similar situations are what exposes this in each character. Both boys are greatly and positively affected by their vulnerability. Alfred, the main character in The Contender, is an African-American boy growing up in 1960s Harlem. He wants to become a boxer, and choose the “right” life path for himself, because of all the dreadful things happening around him.…

On August 2nd, 1941 First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt wrote this quote in her daily newspaper column, “My Day.” In the thick of World War II Roosevelt’s quote inspired many as they fought through their hardships. People learn from doing. We maintain the values that our role models instill in us, but as we gain experience, we fashion our own beliefs. A mirror of this in my life is my work with the organization Soles for Jesus.…

I have chosen to write about Robert Mapplethorne since I am fascinated by his character and passion for art. Robert was a lover and friend of the main character and author of the book ”Just Kids” (Patti Smith), whom he would trust all through his life even as their relationship and feelings for each other changed. Robert was passionate and ambitious but also very caring, and by being who he was he was able to realize his dream of becoming a recognized artist. Robert’s passion for art was evident even when he was young.…

Divine Trust Trusting in a divinity isn’t as easy or straightforward as it sounds. I can most definitely attest to this. As a person raised in the Christian church I have not only have I lived this statement, but over the years I’ve seen it in the lives of various friends in my youth group. I continue to see this struggle to trust throughout the plot of “The Odyssey” by Homer. The protagonist Odysseus, his son Telemachus, and Odysseus’ ship’s crew all are prime examples.…

When volunteering at West Minnehaha it made me realize things that I didn’t pay attention to before going in. The point was to build relationships, problem solve, what to do in a conflict situation, and step outside of my comfort zone. I learned how to do every single one of those things. I realized that the kids are in need of someone who they can look up to and a dependable person who they can count on. For example, I was looking after a few kids that were doing homework and when walking around I hear a conversation of two kids.…

Through those activities there were some kids who were struggling at some activities. I motivated them to keep pushing on, giving them pointers on how to complete the activity. I felt connection to the campers within a week. For example even though I didn’t do a challenge myself, I still felt accomplished by helping out the campers to complete the activity. This experience taught me to trust people who I never meet before.…

Moreover, I’ve learned how to create substantial conversation with kids, including how to approach tougher topics with them. This has made me a smarter and stronger person, with an improved set of skills to help me in the world after high school. On top of volunteering at the library, I’ve also serviced other parts of my community. I’ve consistently peer tutored for NJHS since seventh grade, despite the lack of enforcement behind the requirement. Moreover, I’ve had the privilege to be a Lower School Mentor, which gave me the opportunity to learn the trials and tribulations of a first grade student.…

In order to fulfill the requirements of this paper, I attended a ministry called Common Ground. Common Ground is an after-school mentoring program for underprivileged children in kindergarten through fifth grade that reside here in Waxahachie, Texas. This ministry has volunteers that help the children with their homework, includes a reading program to help the children become better readers and improve their comprehension skills, and allows the volunteers to spend one-on-one time with the children in order to share the love of Christ to them. While attending this ministry I noticed not only one, but several social needs.…

As a high school student, I was greatly involved in service through activities such as being a junior volunteer at my local hospital and creating my own donation drive for a domestic violence shelter. My time at Boise State not only allowed me to continue to serve my community, but I also developed leadership skills and carried out projects I never thought I could be capable of. As a freshman, I helped found the Boise State chapter of Colleges against Cancer and was in charge of creating, implementing, and managing the Luminaria Ceremony at Boise State’s first Relay for Life event. The following year, not only was I director over both the Survivor and Luminaria Ceremony, but as a resident assistant for Boise State Housing, I helped my residents create a team and put on fundraisers for the event as well. Last summer, I volunteered as a counselor for both sessions of the Boise Youth Spectacular, a three-day, LDS-ran youth conference.…

On August 26, 2005, I gave my life to Christ, and it was the start of a whole new chapter of my journey. I still remember that night vividly in my head. The feelings of excitement, joy, and love were very tangible in my heart. My mom and dad were both sitting beside me on my bed while I was told the importance of this decision and how my life would never be the same. Even at 5 years old, I was aware of my decision to follow Jesus and accept him into my heart.…

Thanks the Texas Exes alumni, I was able to go to Camp Texas for free this year. At first I thought that it was like any normal 3- day camping trip, which made me extremely excited since I enjoy camping very much. Once I got there, I realized that it was a different type of camp. I was nervous and scared because I’m not very good at socializing. The reason I’m writing this is because I learned so much about being open minded, accepting, and kind to other people and new experiences.…
