My childhood in New York City was very difficult for me. I grow up in a predominantly Hispanic Dominican decent neighborhood in the upper Manhattan area called Washington Heights. Washington Heights in the early 1990’s was the heart of the drug trade. At one point in the 1990’s it was considered one of the worst neighborhoods to raise a child. I remember in the news, the news anchor reported that New York City was recognized as the crime capital in the 1950's through the early 1990's.…

A brilliant man by the name of Ernest Hemingway, once said "Every man’s life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another. " What comes to mind after reading this statement? Simple, we all end out on the same path eventually in life yet to be noted as the most remarkable person based upon their natural raw passion for life and how they live; is what makes individual. Someone to stand out amongst the many solely based upon their life's actions leading up to one moment is what allows for this opportunity.…

New York otherwise known as the “Big Apple” is home to approximately 19.7 million people. In a closer lense, New York City is home to 8.4 million people. Everytime I go to New York I always spot the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center. For seven summers I went to Camp Matoaka in Maine, each year I would return to the same smiling faces. These familiar faces were always close to my heart, however they were not always in reach.…

Growing up in Brooklyn, in the early 90’s was one of the best experiences in my life. I remember the ice cream trucks, corner stores, fire hydrates being opened for the kids especially when there was a block party but most of all, the unity of families and neighbors. Many people will say “Brooklyn, only the strong survive” and I have lived by that phrase my entire life. It showed me the beauty of living in one of the boroughs that makes up New York City and has taught me to be a strong person. It’s not made for the weak.…

Moving to Chicago in 2014 was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. It meant leaving my life in Puerto Rico and beginning a new one. At first I didn’t get why we had to move and I resented my dad. I figured he didn’t care about us and only wanted to move for his own convenience.…

As a child, I grew up in four different towns and states. Since I was born in Harvey me and my mother lived in that neighborhood for a little while. Harvey was a dangerous town and there was too much violence near my house. When I turned 2 I moved to Chicago Heights, which is an hour away from Harvey and it was a very safe environment. In Chicago Heights, there wasn't a specific place for kids to hang out, but I was two years old until I was gonna be hanging out anyway.…

The complexity of urban environments is something that I have become familiar with through my time spent working, volunteering and studying in Dorchester, MA – a financially diverse urban borough of greater Boston. Attending UMass Boston while living at home did not provide me enough opportunity to experience the city living. I always drove to campus since public transportation was not feasible. But volunteering at MGH in Downtown Boston and at Codman Square Health Center in Dorchester has prepared me for city challenges like travelling in a city using the crowded local subway and buses while being courteous to fellow passengers, and meeting the time schedules. Learning to travel light and staying vigilant helps me to reach my destination easily…

I used to live on Irving Street, right on the border of Queens and Brooklyn. The Mexicanos and Puertorriqueños called it el barrio— the neighborhood. A place where they could hide from white supremacy and racism while enjoying themselves with their people, and, boy, did they know how to party. Coke, pot, meth, whatever your debauchery required. This was the place to get it.…

As a studio owner, music engineer and producer one of the biggest demands is to keep up with the ongoing changes in technology. I remember a time before pursuing this dream in which i became fearful to even begin my pursuit of doing what I was most passionate about. Fear of failure crept in, fear of the unknown, fear of moving to Music City USA and starting this new chapter in my life became somewhat intimidating. The Lord reminded me of who gave me these talents, gifts and abilities I have in the first place. That instantly blew me away!…

Even though they disappoint me, I love girls. I love the way they smell, and the way they looked, and the way they move. And I really loved how the girl in front of me was jogging. She passed me as I was coming to the end of my run along Highbridge Park" which is more of a dump site than park for Washington Heights. As the girl moved in front of me, I noted her strong stride, but it was her resplendent ass that gave me a hard pace.…

It was around that time in the afternoon when you realized your day is not going to be productive because you woke up an hour ago, but you try anyway. I was starving, but my roommate had told me about a brunch place in Harlem called Kitchenette, perfect for my two thirty brunch. For some reason, the subway was far more crowded than usual.
