Personal Narrative: Living In Atlanta

Improved Essays
It was hot and humid. I was a stranger from the other side of the Earth. I had never been in Atlanta before. The only thing that I knew about Atlanta was 1996 Olympic Games through TV. I was not sure how long I was going to stay here and what to do for living. I already missed Seoul, in South Korea where I had spent more than 20 years of my life. Surrounded by mountains, there was a big river winds its way through Seoul. The night view along the river with plentiful skyscrapers was so beautiful. Now I have a dim recollections of the past. It is my sixteenth year in Atlanta and if someone asks me where I prefer to live in, either Seoul or Atlanta, I say emphatically Atlanta is the city where I want to live in. If anybody ask me what would make a good life for me, and I say that exposing myself to various opportunities for what my life want to be, good relationships with the people around me and to practice my faith in a daily life. I want a more comfortable, slower pace of life. Maybe there are some people worry that I don’t understand the longer-term consequences for my life by. When I say slower pace of life, it doesn’t mean that I want to simply slack off. More comfortable does not mean less competitive. People in Seoul have done so well by competing each other, but they are supposed to live with a perpetual sense of insecurity. It burns people out in the long time period, and it can explain one of reasons why the suicide rate in Seoul are very high. In Atlanta, taking slower pace of life is not that people don’t want to pursue excellence, but that is not the only thing people want to pursue. I love to live in Atlanta because I have power to choose the pattern of my life either faster or slower. I can work smart rather than work hard and still be competitive. Unlikely Seoul, this city has that environment of choice. It does not make people wake up every morning and think that we want to do nation-building today but when I can have a holiday with my kids. I believe that people in Atlanta know that providing financially for their family is an important thing, protecting the time with their family is

The Midwest is home to states with rich cultural backgrounds and popular tourist attractions. To take a break from the busy schedule I have as a student, and to avoid writing more essays like this, I went on a vacation to Michigan with my mother and two siblings. We visited South Haven, a pleasant port city on Lake Michigan’s east coast, and Detroit, the famous largest city in Michigan. These areas interest me because there’s plenty to do; there are amazing restaurants, breath-taking scenery, and family-friendly, inexpensive entertainment. South Haven is famed for its relaxed atmosphere and homely feel.…

Then we moved to Columbus, Georgia where I spent half of my childhood. Georgia looks way different than here in Virginia. The air and the land is drier and it’s more humid down there.…

The town was fairly small, but there was plenty to do, especially in surrounding towns. The day I moved to Georgia, we had been living in Texas for five years when my mom said we were moving to Georgia. I graduated my senior year from high school I thought she was lying, but she said that the VA center down in Texas was awful, and she didn’t like it there anyways, but she really wanted a better VA system. Then we started packing every month putting stuff in storage, and having to do open houses every other week, we had to clean, vacuum and take our pets with us every time we left the house until our house finally sold. Then we started looking at houses In Grovetown, also for a good school system then we waited 3 weeks for a house because we were looking at spots with upstairs and down stairs, a big backyard for or dogs, also a school…

For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

Confucianism states that the individual must put the country ahead of himself or herself, but the most violent fight in South Korea right now is the clash between the labor unions and the Chaebol. The workers are subjugated to poor working conditions along with smaller wages. “Workers must work for a better life”[1], this statement seems correct at its inception but it lends a view into the average Korean blue collar worker. It paints the picture that by giving up their self-happiness and working hours upon hours for small wages, that they may be able to provide a better life for their families. “76% of Land in Korea is owned by 6% of Koreans”[2] acutely illustrates the growing wealth gap between the poor and the wealthy, the wealthy’s…

This can often result in a lower family income. Since the 1990s there has been a major shift from traditional family life in South Korea. People in cities are less likely to keep working with relatives and are branching out to “functionally-based relationships” (Savada and Shaw, 1990). An isolated family life is becoming the norm in South Korea. People are living a more on-the-go lifestyle and are having fewer…
