Personal Narrative: Joining The Military

Superior Essays
Not many people in this country would sign up for a job where you can get killed any given day, where you can be shipped to any given place in the world at any time, or where they are forced to create a will at the age of 18 or 19. Many young men across this country sign up for a minimum of a 4 year contract to join the United States military. In my opinion they are the bravest people in the country and rightfully so. They have to leave their loved ones to protect us from all enemies foreign and domestic. I had the pleasure of interviewing three of my friends who are serving or who have served before, and we will take a look through their eyes.

You guys are going to be going to war with these guys soon.” Ben Sandoval had wanted to join the military as a medic ever since he was a young man, but he admits that the thought of going to war made him have second thoughts. As Debs quotes "They have always taught and trained you to believe it to be your patriotic duty to go to war" meaning the government has taught one as a child to serve your country. As you go along in school one develops this mentality that as a citizen of this country one has to fulfill duties that will help the country like fighting in wars. For example, since the start of school a person is required to pledge allegiance to the flag. Students would get in trouble if they were to refuse pledging to the flag. Similar to the draft if one were to resist it, then they would not be for filling their so call duties as a citizen of the United States.…

As a result of strict rules set by the military it leaves a majority of the populace off the list of joining the military to begin with. The article asserts,“Of the starting 21m, around 9.5m would fail a rudimentary academic qualification, either because they had dropped out of high school or, typically, because most young Americans cannot do tricky sums without a calculator. Of the remainder, 7m would be disqualified because they are too fat, or have a criminal record, or tattoos on their hands or faces,” the article claims this as fact and this makes it seem as though it is the populaces fault that no one can join and not the strict rules of the…

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

When I live on a military base, change is constant, even if it is not my own family experiencing the orders to move that year. The houses around me fill and empty all the time with new people, and some of the military dominant schools I have been to have the same problem.…

Growing up I never had to be careful while playing outside, or have to worry about something bad happening. My mother was a trauma nurse in the Air Force from before I was born, up to about two and a half years ago. I grew up on Military bases which were pretty safe and were like a little communities which consisted of other families in the Air Force. By the time I was 12 years old I had lived in four different states, two different countries (including the U.S.), attended five different Elementary School’s, and two different Middle Schools. The household I was raised in consisted of a single mother, an older brother by nine years, and older sister by seven years.…
