It took us a few weeks to reach our first port, which was Oslo, Norway. “This is amazing,” I thought. Visiting the land of the Northmen I have reads stories of most my life was a feat that I never thought would happen. Over the next month that the ship was doing maneuvers with other allied ships from England, Norway, France and Spain; I was moved to the Wardroom as a cook for the officers who were onboard. This simply was one of the best things to ever happen to me. While working at night, I would discuss music with the some of the helicopter pilots. I would always send food with them when they would go on their night operations and then have a hot meal waiting for them when they came back to the ship. Little did I know that this would be what would lead to the ultimate experience I have had in my

My first major mission, a young 18 year old, the lead gunner behind a M240B as the first line of defense for our platoon; would soon be a situation that left an imprint in my life and has forever changed how I now lead as an NCO. This mission took place in 2007 near the city of Ad Dawr, Iraq. The mission was complex but my orders were simple, protect the convoy and provide security. The main objective was to expose and detain (if possible) a cell leader to include destroying his know cache point.
