Personal Narrative: Life After Gaining Military Service

How many students graduate from high school and don’t know where to find a job, or what degree to pursue? I attempted college after completing high school, but lacked any guidance or direction to complete my degree. Without discipline and initiative I found myself dropping out after the second semester and looking for a job. What experience did I have? None! At least none that would help me start a career and allow me the opportunity to move out of my parents’ home. Finding the standard retail job, I joined so many young men and women that face life after high school. With no direction I looked toward military service. And, for the ambitious, there’s the prospect of continued public service after the military, whether in the civil service or elective office” (Kingsbury). By gaining tangible skills these young adults can capitalize on these skills, whether technical repair of an engine or the preparation of a meal for the crew, each young adult as the opportunity for success. Leadership continues to train each individual to work as a cohesive unit, as a team. By redefining teamwork, military leaders guide their men and women to work together to complete each task, and achieve each goal, while focusing on the standard, “overcome and adapt “ a philosophy inherit of military service. Additional skills that will be learned while serving is leadership, those with natural leadership abilities will hone their skills as they teach others the art of leadership. With each promotion, responsibility increases, this shifts the leader mentality from themselves to others as the leader must consider how his or her decision affects their …show more content…
Through years of service these uniform men and women will be exposed to our country’s rich heritage and achievements, from the Revolutionary War to the War on Terrorism. Teaching about the sacrifice our forefathers willingly gave and how by their bloodshed, they secured our future and freedom will enrich our young adults, while preparing them for their future and it will also build a deep sense of respect for our ancestors’ accomplishments.
