Personal Narrative: Finding A Mental Illness In My Family

Finding a mental illness that I have witnessed or been affected by was as simple as spinning a wheel to decided what family member I wanted to speak about. From schizophrenia to anxiety I've seen it all. However there is one mental illness that runs deep throughout my family, one that hasn't skipped a member since ‘58 and that is the abuse of drugs or alcohol.
You would think from generation to generation one would learn to break a pattern. My grandparents lost their oldest boy at the age of 5 to a hit and run, which seemed to kick start this domino effect of addiction. The lack of awareness drove my mother and her siblings to turn to a substance of choice, it didn't help that they grew up in a small town with nothing better to do then to

There usually is a lot of underlying circumstance such as abuse, learned behavior, coping, or peer pressure to name a few.
