Like most people, I share the same values as my parents. My parents fled a country characterized by war and poverty in search for a better life, and better opportunities for their future children; the so coveted “American Dream”. I was always grateful to grow up in a country where I had the opportunity for education and success, in contradiction to my parents. I wanted nothing more than to make them proud -- to make their long journey worthwhile.
Even though my parents wanted to raise me and my siblings differently than they had been brought up, they didn’t want us to completely lose touch with our Oromo roots. I still listen to Afaan Oromo being spoken, participate
