At the very beginning of the story, Buck is sold into a completely new life. He begins with a simple life living with a California judge. That changes drastically when he is sold to be a sled dog in the Yukon Gold Rush. He has never worked in these conditions before, and works hard to learn about his new job and how to do his best possible. While learning he is beaten with clubs and beat up by the other sled dogs. Buck begins fighting with another sled dog for the lead dog position on the team. Their fight continues while the team travels into the busy town of Dawson. At the height of their dual, Buck takes control and kills the rival dog to become the leader of the team. However, he is soon forced to join a new team with new owners. A man in a stop-by city saves Buck’s life when he is being beaten by these new owners. This man is John Thornton. Buck’s new job was to protect John. He was being loved for the first time, and was being challenged to new things. There was a bet placed on Buck that he couldn’t pull a sled weighing 1000 pounds, but Buck did it. Eventually, John is killed by a native tribe, the Yeehats. Buck can finally answer the call that is pulling him to join a wild wolf pack. He was living in Texas with a construction job when the economy tanked. My dad lost his job and decided to go back to college. While at the University of Texas, he worked hard to graduate. Joining study groups, learning how to budget low, and avoiding partying, my father graduated with an engineering degree and the opportunity to study abroad at the University of Australia. He no longer does menial labor for his job, and moved to Kansas where he raised a family. With an engineering degree, he has more job opportunities.
