The Call of the Wild, by Jack London, takes place in the menacing and formidable Yukon. It talks about the life of a dog, Buck, that was ripped away from his comfortable home in the southland (Santa Clara Valley, CA), and forced to work as a sled dog. It highlights the Buck’s journey from being a lazy dog with a comfortable life, to being a tough sled dog who can survive anything. Buck is passed from master to master until he finally meets John Thornton, the first man to ever love him. But a tragic turn of events leads to Buck severing all ties with mankind and finally answering the call of the wild. Every time Buck wandered out into the woods, he was drawn to the call “but as often as he gained the soft unbroken earth and the green shade, the love for John Thornton drew him back to the fire again.” (pg 60). He almost went after it and answered it with his wild brother but then he remembered John Thornton and he had to turn around even though all of his instincts were telling him to leave John. After John died, Buck stayed by his body for a while, but then he realized there was nothing holding him there anymore so he went in search of other dogs to answer the call, “the last tie was broken. Man and the claims of man no longer bound him.” (pg 76). If Buck had left John and answered the call, John never would’ve gone to the far north in search of gold and he never would’ve been killed, Buck would have never had to experience that kind of terrible grief and never would’ve learned to only fear men when they have …show more content…
The Call of the Wild teaches one about love and how love is the strongest force that has the power to heal, and the power to break someone.
